Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Leyton
Gardeners Leyton is committed to providing a safe working environment for all staff, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening operations. This policy sets out our approach to hazard control, safe working practices and continuous improvement in safety standards for all garden maintenance and landscape services operating in and around Leyton and nearby areas. The document applies to every person working under the company’s direction, whether full-time, part-time, casual or contracted.
We recognise that effective safety management supports reliable service delivery for garden maintenance in Leyton and helps preserve the well-being of our team. Our objectives are to reduce injury and ill health, prevent damage to property and the environment, and to ensure that safe systems of work are followed for all tasks including planting, pruning, turf works and grounds maintenance.
Scope and Responsibilities
The responsibilities for safety are shared. Management will:- Provide leadership and the resources necessary to manage risk;
- Ensure risk assessments are carried out for routine tasks and bespoke projects;
- Provide appropriate training and supervision.
We carry out documented risk assessments before commencing work. These assessments consider hazards such as manual handling, use of powered equipment, working at height on ladders, contact with vegetation that may contain thorns or allergens, what to do around buried services, and traffic management when working near roads. The assessment process also evaluates environmental risks including pesticide and fertiliser application and appropriate waste disposal practices.
Training, Competence and Supervision
The company provides induction training, role-specific instruction and ongoing refresher training. Supervisors ensure that operatives carrying out landscaping, hedge cutting or tree work are competent and that apprentices or new staff are closely supervised. We value practical experience but require documented confirmation of competence for higher-risk activities and the operation of specialist machinery.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be supplied and maintained. This includes high-visibility clothing, gloves, eye and hearing protection, protective footwear, and respiratory protection where dust or sprays present a risk. All staff are required to wear appropriate PPE for the task and to inspect equipment before use. The replacement and cleaning of PPE are part of our ongoing safety regime.
Plant, tools and machinery will be inspected and maintained in line with manufacturer guidance and service schedules. For powered tools such as chainsaws, lawnmowers and brushcutters we use guarding, emergency stop features and secure storage. Equipment faults must be reported immediately and defective items taken out of service. Safe systems of work will be established for fuel handling and the charging or storage of batteries.
Manual handling and ergonomics are addressed through task design, use of mechanical aids where practicable, and team-lift procedures. We encourage staff to report any discomfort or strains so that tasks can be adapted. Lone working procedures are in place for gardeners operating independently: these include regular check-ins, mobile phone availability and pre-planned routes for field staff.
Emergency arrangements and first aid provisions are maintained across our operations. At least one trained first aider will be available on larger sites, and first aid kits are carried in vehicles and stored at depots. In the event of an incident, prompt reporting and investigation will be carried out to identify root causes and to prevent recurrence. Fire safety, spill response and incident escalation procedures are accessible to all staff.
Environmental control and safe use of chemicals form part of our safety commitment. Where herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers are used we follow product instructions, COSHH principles and safe application methods. Substitution for less hazardous products is considered where practical, and all chemicals are stored securely with clear labelling. Waste management includes segregation, secure disposal of green waste and responsible transport to authorised facilities.
The company actively promotes a safety culture where every operative is empowered to stop work if they believe an activity is unsafe. Regular toolbox talks, safety briefings and site-specific instructions reinforce behaviour that prevents accidents. We also use incident reporting to learn and to share preventative measures across teams of local gardening professionals and Leyton-based crews.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement — Our safety management system is monitored through audits, inspections and performance indicators such as near-miss reports and corrective actions closed. The policy is reviewed annually or sooner after a significant event or change in operations. Senior management, supervisors and staff contribute to reviews to ensure the system remains practical and effective for garden services, grounds maintenance and landscaping works in the area.
Conclusion: Gardeners Leyton is committed to a proactive, practical and people-focused approach to health and safety. By following these principles — clear responsibility, robust risk assessment, proper training, suitable equipment and ongoing review — we aim to deliver quality gardening services with minimal risk to people and the environment. All staff are expected to embrace and contribute to this policy as part of their duties.
